Stream Operations and Technical Director Hardware
Overview
- Project: Media Pipeline Infrastructure
- Status: Active — hardware evaluation phase
- Focus: Transitioning from “Editor” to “Technical Director” role
Hardware Architecture: Ingest, Truth, Transport
Capture Cards (Ingest)
Convert camera signals (HDMI/SDI) to software-readable inputs.
- Consumer (Elgato Cam Link 4K): Compresses to 4:2:0 — fine for streaming, bad for color correction
- Professional (Blackmagic DeckLink): Clean feed, bypasses OS color interference
I/O Devices (Truth)
- DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K (195):SamecleanfeedasUltraStudio(1,100) for $800 less; PCIe card vs. external
- Use case: Color grading in Resolve with mathematically perfect signal to reference monitor
Hardware Encoders (Transport)
- Verdict: Not needed — RTX 4080/4090 dual NVENC chips are more powerful than most standalone encoder boxes
Software Stack
| Tool | Role | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|
| OBS | Blank canvas switcher | Free, plugin ecosystem, Python scripting | No auto-reconnect, no call manager |
| vMix | Broadcast standard | TV station in a box, Mix Minus, vMix Call | $700-1200, overkill for solo operator |
| vdo.ninja | Remote link | Peer-to-peer, zero delay, raw 1080p/4K feeds | Requires technical setup |
Home TD Workflow
Signal Flow
- Local Camera → HDMI → Cam Link → Workstation
- Remote Guest → vdo.ninja → Browser Source in OBS
- Switching → Stream Deck XL cuts between scenes
- Color Monitor → DeckLink → Calibrated ProArt display
- Output → NVENC stream to YouTube + MKV record to server
Budget Hardware Package ($12k total)
| Component | Allocation |
|---|
| Server “Vault” | $7,000 (8x 20TB + 4x NVMe) |
| Stream Ops Workstation | $3,800 (RTX 4080 Super + Ryzen 9 + DeckLink) |
| TD Peripherals | $1,200 (Stream Deck XL + Shure MV7+ + ProArt monitor) |
