Volmarg Personal Management System Evaluation
Overview
- Project: Self-Hosted Tool Stack Evaluation
- Status: Rejected for organizational use
- What: Open-source self-hosted personal life organizer (todos, notes, contacts, passwords, files)
Verdict: Do Not Implement
Volmarg PMS is a “single-player tool in a multi-player world.” Structurally designed to isolate and privatize data for one user — opposite of organizational needs for integration, sharing, and governance.
Gap Analysis
| Module | Individual Value | Org Value | Critical Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Todo/Goals | Excellent for habits | Low | No assignment, dependencies, Gantt, sprints |
| Notes | Good brain dumps | Low | No real-time collaboration or version history |
| Contacts | Personal address book | Negative | Creates shadow IT — client data trapped in silos |
| Passwords | Convenient | High Risk | No SOC2 compliance, audit logs, shared vaults, MFA |
| Self-Hosted | Total privacy | Low | High maintenance overhead, no SLA |
Only Viable Use Cases
- Employee Wellness Perk — provide server space for personal (non-work) life organization
- Air-Gapped Contractor — isolated task management for someone who must not access corporate network
Better Alternatives
- Todo/Notes: Notion, Wiki.js, BookStack
- CRM: EspoCRM, SuiteCRM
- Passwords: Bitwarden (self-hosted), 1Password
