MCP Security for Agentic Workflows

Hypothesis

How can Model Context Protocol (MCP) be secured for production agentic workflows while maintaining flexibility and human oversight?

Approach

  1. Analyzed MCP architecture and security surface
  2. Identified human-in-the-loop authorization patterns
  3. Evaluated RBAC and context injection strategies
  4. Designed MCP Gateway pattern for production use

Findings

Key Observations

Core MCP Security Principles:

  1. Human-in-the-Loop Authorization: All sensitive operations require explicit human approval
  2. Dynamic Context Injection: Context provided just-in-time to minimize exposure
  3. Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Agents receive minimum necessary permissions
  4. Audit Logging: All agent actions logged for review

The Read-Reason-Act Loop:

┌─────────┐ ┌─────────┐ ┌─────────┐
│ READ │ ──▶ │ REASON │ ──▶ │ ACT │
│ Context │ │ Plan │ │ Execute │
└─────────┘ └─────────┘ └─────────┘
     │ │ │
     └───────────────┴───────────────┘
              Human Review Gate

MCP Gateway Pattern:

Router agent mediates between user requests and specialized agents:

ComponentResponsibility
GatewayRequest validation, routing, logging
Router AgentTask decomposition, agent selection
Specialist AgentsDomain-specific execution
Approval QueueHuman review buffer

Security Boundaries:

  • Network Level: MCP servers run locally or in trusted VPC
  • Permission Level: Explicit tool/resource permissions per agent
  • Data Level: Context filtering before injection
  • Audit Level: Immutable action logs

Implementation Patterns

  1. Capability-Based Security: Agents receive tokens for specific actions
  2. Sandboxed Execution: Agent code runs in isolated environments
  3. Rate Limiting: Prevent runaway agent loops
  4. Dead Man’s Switch: Automatic shutdown on anomalous behavior

Outcome

Status: Success

Security patterns well-defined. Ready for implementation in production workflows.

Next Steps

  • Implement MCP Gateway in test environment
  • Define RBAC roles for organization agents
  • Create approval queue UI
  • Establish audit log retention policy
