Clean Code Practices and ALP Framework
Overview
Clean code is software that is easy to read, understand, and maintain. This reference covers clean code principles, a practical checklist, and the ALP (Aloysius Logic Protocol) framework for bridging speech to pseudocode to clean code.
Core Principles
The Golden Rule
Can a junior developer understand this code and fix a bug without asking the original author?
Economic Viability
| Time Horizon | Investment | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term | +10-20% dev time | Better structure |
| Long-term | Maintained quality | -50% maintenance |
Clean Code Checklist
1. Naming & Readability
- Intention is clear (
daysSinceCreationnotd) - Names are pronounceable
- Magic numbers replaced with constants
- Terminology is consistent
- Booleans named as questions (
isActive,hasAccess)
2. Functions & Methods
- Functions do ONE thing
- Indentation level minimal (1-2 levels)
- Arguments minimal (0-2 ideal)
- Side effects are obvious
3. Data & Logic
- DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself)
- Error states handled explicitly
- Conditionals are positive (no double negatives)
- Happy path is clear
4. Comments & Documentation
- Comments explain WHY, not WHAT
- Commented-out code removed
- TODOs are actionable with owners
5. Testing
- Test code is clean and maintained
- Tests cover edge cases
- Tests are independent
ALP Framework
Purpose
The Aloysius Logic Protocol (ALP) bridges:
Speech → Pseudocode → Clean Code
ALP Structure
BEGIN Block_Name
INPUT parameter_name DEFAULT value
SET variable = expression
IF condition THEN
action
END IF
RETURN result
END Block_Name
Key Features
| Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Explicit Inputs | Forces dependency declaration |
| Bounded Complexity | Max 4 nesting levels |
| Machine-Parsable | Can generate code skeletons |
| HANDOFF primitive | Models human-in-the-loop |
ALP Compiler Benefits
- Code Skeleton Generation: ALP → Python/TypeScript
- Auto-Generated Tests: Inputs/outputs define test cases
- Documentation Sync: Logic spec stays current
Pre-Commit Quality Gate

pre-commit installBoy Scout Rule
Always leave the code slightly cleaner than you found it.
Clean the file you’re touching; don’t refactor the whole system.
Implementation Strategy
- Automate Formatting: Prettier, ESLint, Black
- Review for Readability: “Will I understand this in 6 months?”
- Self-Documenting Code: Comments explain why, not what
- Consistent Enforcement: Pre-commit hooks
