PyAutoGUI Cross-Platform GUI Automation

Problem

Need desktop automation that works across Windows, macOS, and Linux with a single codebase. AHK is Windows-only; Hammerspoon is macOS-only; AutoKey is Linux-only.

Solution

PyAutoGUI — Python library for programmatic mouse/keyboard control via screen coordinates and image recognition. Same script runs on all three platforms.

Core Capabilities

FeatureDetail
Mouse ControlMove, click, drag to pixel coordinates
Keyboard ControlType text, send hotkeys (hotkey('ctrl', 'c'))
Screenshot + Image RecognitionlocateOnScreen('button.png') finds UI elements visually
Alerts/DialogsDisplay message boxes during script execution
Fail-SafeMouse to top-left corner triggers emergency stop

Key Strength: Python Ecosystem

The real value is access to Python’s entire ecosystem:

  • OpenCV — advanced image recognition (far beyond AHK’s ImageSearch)
  • Pandas — read Excel/CSV data, type into legacy GUIs
  • Requests — pull API data, interact with desktop apps

Critical Limitations

  1. Pixel Dependence — scripts break on different resolutions or UI changes
  2. Active Screen Required — cannot run in background; needs visible display
  3. No Native Element ID — unlike Selenium/Pywinauto, only sees pixels, not UI tree
  4. No Global Hotkeys — must add keyboard or pynput library to listen for keys

Pro Strategy: AHK + PyAutoGUI Bridge

Power users combine both: AHK handles listening (global hotkeys, system tray), then triggers Python scripts for heavy lifting (data processing, image recognition, API calls).

Setup

pip install pyautogui
# Linux: also install scrot for screenshots
# Image recognition: requires Pillow
